I had fantasized about being a successful entrepreneur from a young age. All I knew was I wanted to impact others in a positive way. I wanted to create something I was proud of, something that gave back to the world.
And so I started spending time with other like-minded people striving to become successful entrepreneurs. I started to think, act, and operate like them. It was then I became so immersed in personal development and focused on my life’s mission.
In short, this focus changed my life.
But being focused is easier said than done. Everywhere we look there are distractions! Technology, things to look at, things to read, things to touch.
Studies have shown that people switch activities every 3 minutes due to their external distractions.
Distractions are not only frustrating; they can be energy zapping and downright exhausting. By the time you get back to where you were, your ability to stay focused goes down even further.
In fact, less energy means less capacity to understand, decide, recall, memorize, and inhibit.
Being able to focus and be productive is soooo important for our brain functioning and our confidence.
Don't believe me? Read below as I share just 3 (of many) big benefits of maintaining your focus.
BIG BENEFIT 1: You'll Improve Your Memory
When we lose focus during the day, we lose the opportunity to lock in those experiences as memories. Once we are tuned-in to the world around us, our experiences can be used as the building blocks of our lives, and our memories help teach us how we can use those blocks to build our future. As the famous quote goes, "those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it." (-George Santayana).
BIG BENEFIT 2: You'll Be More Aware
Along with building stronger, longer-lasting memories, focus will help to heighten self-awareness. When we are focused, we are truly "in the moment". Once that happens you become more in tune with yourself: how you feel, what you think, the emotions you have, and how you respond to the things going on around you.
As you become more aware, it's much easier to predict how your body will react to certain stresses or how your heart will jump from romantic gestures, so you can rein in your reactions and get the most out of every situation.
BIG BENEFIT 3: You'll Become Less Self-Critical
Once your memory and self-awareness have grown, it becomes more and more difficult to self-criticize. Your brain will instead learn from your experiences to help mold future ones, rather than dwelling on the past. As we learn from ourselves, we begin to open more paths of self-appreciation and understanding. The less time we spend on self-criticism, the more time we have available for growth and development.
