Commitments are something we make all the time.
But when was the last time you thought about what you are really committed to?
Believe it or not, there's a difference between commitment and actually being committed to something. Understanding the difference between the two can give you a completely new perspective of what's really important to you.
A commitment is typically a specific time-sensitive promise that you make to another person. When you RSVP yes to a wedding invitation, for example, you're making a commitment to attend on that date. You either fulfill on your promise or you don't. But once the wedding has come and gone, the commitment no longer exists.
On the other hand, being committed to something is more of a general personal stand that you make to yourself that's in line with your core values. For example, you may be committed to living a healthy lifestyle or to being the best partner you can be for your mate.
Being committed to something involves a deeper level of dedication, and as you fulfill on what you're committed to through your daily actions, you will most likely feel excited, energized and fulfilled.
So let me ask you: What are you committed to in your life?
Here are 3 steps that will help you shine some light on what it is that you're truly committed to and how to take more inspired action towards fulfilling on it on a daily basis:
Step #1: Get clear on the areas of life that are most important to you
Give some thought to the different parts of your life, and choose which ones are the most important to you. Maybe it's having close relationships with your friends and family, or feeling healthy, energetic and vital? Make a list of which areas are your highest priorities. If you can only think of one or two areas, that's perfectly fine. Remember: this is about quality, not quantity.
Step #2: Make a list of actions you could take to enhance these areas
Take a few minutes to think about how you'd like each of the areas of life that you've listed to look. What actions could you take to enhance these areas?
If you've listed having close relationships with your friends and family, think about meaningful ways that you could interact with them.
For example, you could send them cards on their birthdays and other major life events with a quick note to let them know you are thinking about them. Or perhaps you could try to reach out to a different person every day by phone, Skype or email. Another action you could take is to send a surprise care package full of goodies every once in a while just to say I love you!
Step #3: Schedule it in
Once you make a list of actions you could take - big or small - in each of these areas to create more of what it is that you desire, the next step is to schedule them in to make sure that you cross each one off of your list.
There are all sorts of task management tools out there that will help you with this... so use them! :)
If you want to spend more time enhancing your level of spirituality, for example, schedule in a 10-minute block of time to meditate each day. You could also try setting a reminder on your calendar or phone to let you know when the time has come to take this action!
By taking some time to identify the areas of life that are most important to you, then by listing and scheduling in actions you can take to "water" each of these areas, you'll be sure to see them grow and flourish.
