Self-Esteem answers the question, "How do I feel about who I am?"

When you have low self-esteem you feel negative about yourself, and you may even act in a self-destructive, or self-defeating manner.

Low self-esteem is what I believe to be the root cause of many problems (like addiction for example), and it's a main reason why many people don't accomplish their goals. If schools, parents, and leaders put more emphasis on self-esteem, confidence, and self-worth, the world would be a lot better off.

This is why today I'm providing simple tips that will help raise your self-esteem and ultimately boost your self-worth.

1) Identify Triggers To Low Self-Esteem

Each of us has something that makes us tick, something that puts us in a bad mood, or makes us upset. You need to identify what makes you feel bad about yourself so you can act accordingly. For example, maybe there's a particular person who always makes you feel bad because they criticize you or put down your dreams and aspirations. Once you recognize the people and things that make you feel like this, you can then focus on ways to uplift yourself. This may mean spending less time with those who don't support you and spending more time doing things that make you feel happy and inspired.

2) Take Responsibility

In order to live a happier more fulfilled life, you need to recognize that YOU are responsible for your life and the results you get. Blaming others for your problems or always playing victim may provide temporary satisfaction, but in the long run, will only hurt you. So every time you want to pin your problem on someone else, look inward and think, "What could I have done differently?" Remember, the puck stops with you, and only YOU have the power to change your life.

3) Spend More Time On Your Appearance

I know it might sound superficial, but trust me, it works. No one is more conscious of your physical appearance than you are. When you feel bad about your appearance it affects the way you interact with others, and the way you carry yourself. If you spend a little more time getting ready in the morning, others will notice, and the compliments will help boost your self-esteem. When you look good, you feel good!

4) Exercise Regularly

Physical activity is a huge boost to your confidence. For one, you will feel SO accomplished when you get into a workout routine. You will feel proud of yourself and that in itself will raise your confidence levels. On top of that, you will look good. Your body will be fitter, and you will feel sexier. It's proven that exercise boosts your endorphins. You may feel guilty and regretful when you don't exercise, but you will never feel remorseful or guilty after you exercise. Exercise does the body and mind good, so go on, get out there!

5) Stop Negative Thoughts in Their Track

One of my favorite quotes (from one of my favorite mentors) is:

"Thoughts become things, choose the good ones." - Mike Dooley

And it's true, what you think will eventually happen in your real life. All profound change starts in your mind. So the next time you catch yourself thinking negative thoughts about yourself (or others), stop yourself, and turn that negative thought into a positive thought. Controlling your mind can be very difficult, but it's oh so rewarding! This is something I personally struggled with years ago, so I know how tough it might feel to change your thoughts, at least in the beginning, but it's definitely worth it when you start seeing the positive results in your life. So don't delay, and start changing your thoughts today.

6) Happiness is a Choice

You choose to be happy and confident. So in order to feel it, you need to make that choice, and then create a mantra for yourself. You can repeat this mantra each day, or whenever you need a boost. I challenge you to create one right now that speaks to you and share it in the comment box below to help uplift our Mind Movies community.
