Did you know that by the time you're about 6 years old, your subconscious mind will have already been imprinted with your most deeply held beliefs about who you are, what you're worth and what you're capable of?
It's really quite incredible!
Before the age of 6, our growing brains are just like sponges that absorb all of the messages that we observe - good or bad - from our parents, teachers and caregivers.
After even just a little bit of repetition, these messages get stored in our subconscious minds as beliefs on how the world works and our place in it.
After age 6, our brains actually start filtering the information we receive to only take in "what makes sense" for us, based on these beliefs. We continue to do this throughout our adult lives...
And still, deep in our subconscious minds lie all of those beliefs we absorbed in "toddlerdom". If these beliefs are negative ones, they can block us from reaching our financial, relationship and fitness goals as adults, despite our best efforts to achieve them.
These types of beliefs are known as limiting beliefs. And one of the most common limiting beliefs is centered around money.
Do you have a self-limiting belief about money?
If you're parents regularly fought about money in front of you when you were little, for example, you may be harboring a subconscious self-limiting belief that, "money causes pain and suffering".
Today, this belief may cause you to repel money on a subconscious level in ways that you may not even realize! And if you’d like to make more money and actually become more successful, we must get rid of this belief!
If you aren't where you'd like to be financially, chances are you may have a self-limiting belief around money. Here are three telltale signs:
Red flag #1: You avoid money matters altogether.
Maybe you don't pay attention to how much you're spending or how much you have in your bank account. Rather than facing the truth about your finances, you simply just avoid them altogether.
To attract more wealth, think of money as energy. It is an exchange for something we value. So instead of repelling it or being fearful of it, be mindful of how you spend it. Enjoy the money you have and be happy for the things you can buy.
Red flag #2: You are afraid of spending too much money.
One great way to fight the feeling of spending too much money is by making a list of “luxuries” vs. “necessities”. Sometimes, when we buy frivolous things, we may have buyer’s remorse or have anxiety that we are spending too much. Give yourself a budget and sort out things that you truly need and ones that you can live without (for now).
Do not let the fear of spending money on things you really need get in the way of your success - for instance, every time you spend money, even if it’s on bills, feel grateful that you have a car, or you can pay for electricity, or that you have a credit card to make your life easier.
Also, every week or month, put some money away in savings. This will give you a sense of security and relief. And as you make more money, you can save even more.
Red flag #3: You compulsively buy things to make yourself feel better.
Instead of facing your true inner demons, you use shopping as a temporary solution to make yourself feel better. This results in a vicious and expensive habit that can burn through all your extra money without ever making you happy.
If you are needing a pick-me-up, take yourself outside! Perhaps walking along the beach, cozying up with a great novel, or writing affirmations and making a vision board - all of these bursts of happiness and moments of being in flow will actually help you attract more wealth, as you will be in a positive vibration.
If any of these three red flags ring true for you, do not worry! The good news is that you can absolutely eliminate your self-limiting beliefs around money.
