Stress. Burnout. Worry. Are you experiencing any of these things right now?
These are only a few of the low-frequency feelings that can impact our ability to lead happy and healthy lives.
Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed at work, making it hard to stay on top of important tasks.
Or you’re stressed about money or finances or feeling like it’s hard to get ahead.
Or maybe things feel a bit shaky in your relationships, and you’re having a tough time figuring out what’s next.
Well, if you can relate, I’ve got just the cure to the woes in life that can take a toll on not just the nervous system but our ability to properly manage stress, depression, and anxiety.
The answer? Grounding.
Grounding also referred to as “earthing,” is a practice that involves activities that connect or ground us electrically to the earth.
This is a highly therapeutic technique that puts the body in direct connection to the ground below us – think walking barefoot in the grass or sinking your toes into the sand at the beach.
You see, everything on earth is made up of atoms that have a positive, negative, or neutral charge.
Your body possesses a chemical charge that can be disrupted by all of the other atoms or things on the planet that are also charged.
But the earth essentially has an unlimited supply of negatively charged electrons that radiate from below the earth’s surface. And it’s things like the sun, weather, and the earth’s orbit that recharge this endless supply of electrons.
And since the earth’s surface is a conductor of energy, it’s only natural for static electricity to want to find its way back to earth through the ground.
So what does all of this mean, and how does it help reduce stress?
Well, the practice of grounding (or earthing) is when you use the earth’s energy to discharge any built-up static electricity you have within you.
So if your internal charge is off – maybe you’re feeling stressed or anxious –getting grounded helps restore you back to neutral.
Over the years, we’ve continued to distance or disconnect ourselves from the natural supply of electrons produced by the earth’s surface that aids in our overall wellbeing. Even wearing shoes contributes to this disconnect.
So earthing can be done simply by taking a walk barefoot on the earth’s surface, so as long as your body is in direct connection to the ground.
Earthing is a natural way to help you calm down and relieve stress and anxiety by soaking up the negative electrical charges the earth’s surface has to offer.
So when you consider adrenal health or our “fight or flight” response to stress and anxiety, this technique can provide both physical and emotional healing.
The negative effects of stress that target the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in the body lets our bodies know how much of our stress hormones, like adrenaline and cortisol, to release.
Because by grounding, you are disrupting those stress hormones with the earth’s energy to neutralize your inner charge.
This then allows you to regulate the cortisol in the body to help you stay calm and better manage anxiety after stressful instances.
Grounding also helps reduce pain and inflammation in the body, improves sleep, and even neutralizes the free radicals trapped inside of us that can damage our good cells.
So if someone were to tell you that you could simply take a barefoot walk in a park to treat stress and anxiety, would you do it?
Well, grounding has been a go-to stress reliever for me whenever I need a moment to recharge and get back to center.
It’s also a great time to practice things like visualization, meditation, and breath-work!
