Are you one of those people that can never seem to make decisions? Do you find yourself going into analysis of every possible outcome until you're paralyzed with indecision?
If so, you're not alone. Many people suffer from indecision and overanalyzing, which can lead to sabotaging habits like procrastination and a lack of productivity. Which, in turn, can leave you feeling anxious and even more stressed out about what to do next.
Indecisiveness is the state of being unable or unwilling to decide on something or somebody. Overthinking is also a part of this definition, as it’s common for many to have problems with indecision at some point in their life.
It can be related to anything, from whether or not you want spaghetti for dinner to whether or not you’re ready to make a drastic career change.
But if you want to overcome indecision and overthinking, it first starts with learning how to trust your gut instinct. But how do you get to that state of being decisive and confidently making the right choice?
Well, you've first got to understand the causes of being indecisive, which can include:
- Fear of failure: Where you feel the pressure of not wanting to make the wrong decision and end up regretting it, so you overanalyze everything.
- Lack of information: Sometimes, we don't have enough information to make a decision, so we put it off.
- Analysis paralysis: This is when you keep analyzing your options until you become so overwhelmed that you can't decide on anything.
- Lack of motivation: This is probably the most common one, where we would rather do nothing than make a decision that might not be perfect.
Understanding, first, what puts you in this state of paralysis will give you a better sense of how to better hold yourself accountable to make decisions with intention.
So here are a few things you can keep in the back of your mind the next time you are faced with indecision:
Make a list of pros and cons
When you're struggling to make a decision, it can be helpful to make a list of pros and cons. This will help you to see the situation more objectively and make a decision that's best for you.
Ask yourself what would make you happy
If you're struggling to make a decision, ask yourself what would make you happy. If the decision caused you to lose sleep or made your stomach churn, then it's likely not a good one. You should also take into consideration what will happen if the decision does work out for you.
Be decisive
Once you've made a decision, stick to it no matter what. Don't change your mind at the last minute just because someone disagrees with you. If you're indecisive, it will only lead to confusion and chaos. This is where you learn to trust your gut!
Set some clear goals for yourself
These goals should be realistic and attainable. Having goals will help you to stay motivated and focused. You'll be able to move forward in life rather than getting stuck in indecision and analysis paralysis.
Set deadlines for every goal and task on your list
This will help you to stay organized and motivated, not to mention practice being intentional. You'll be more likely to take action when you know that a certain goal needs to be accomplished by a certain date.
Take action
The truth is, if you're constantly analyzing a situation, you'll never make any progress. Once you've made a decision, take action and see it through to the end.
Don't be afraid to fail
Failure is a part of life. It's how we learn and grow. Don't be afraid to fail because it will only make you stronger in the long run.
Live in the present
Don't spend too much time dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. The only moment that exists is right now. So if you're always living in the past or future, you'll never be able to enjoy the present.
Keep yourself occupied
If you're indecisive and overanalyzing things, it can make you feel overwhelmed and stressed out. This can lead to feeling depressed or anxious. To avoid this vicious cycle, keep yourself occupied! If your mind is preoccupied with other things, you'll be less likely to overanalyze.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
If you're struggling to overcome indecision and overthinking, there’s no shame in seeking help or guidance from an outside source. So don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
